What a week its been for the Padres, and it just keeps getting better.
San Diego won their sixth consecutive game with the help of Trent Grishams three home run performance, and also hit their fifth grand slam in six games, this time off the bat of Jake Cronenworth.
As for Grisham, hes quickly developed into the player the Padres envisioned when they acquired him in the offseason, along with Zach Davies, from Milwaukee for Luis Urias and Eric Lauer. The former first-round picks bat took off in the minors last season, and hes continued to show great offensive ability.f
Grisham went 4-for-5 with his three homers, plus six RBI and three runs scored. Hes settled in as the Padres leadoff man since last Sunday. Grisham has an impressive .271/.381/.533 triple slash following that performance with seven home runs, 14 RBI, and 20 runs scored in 29 games, along with four stolen bases.
While we shouldnt get carried away with the early numbers, Grisham is in a position to succeed hitting atop a lineup that now ranks second in MLB in runs scored. Hes shown the talent to do it all in the minors, hitting more than 20 home runs and stealing more than 20 bases, albeit in different seasons.
Things continue to look up for Grisham and the rest of the Padres hitters with an upcoming week that includes three home games against Seattle, followed by a visit to Coors Field.
More Notable Pitching Debuts
We already saw top pitching prospects Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, and Dane Dunning make their MLB debuts earlier this week, and yesterday featured three more prospects taking an MLB mound for the first time.
Cleveland flamethrower Triston McKenzies debut was the most impressive. The right-hander and 2015 first-round pick tore through Detroits anemic lineup, allowing only one run on two hits and fanning 10 batters. The only damage was a home run from Willi Castro.
McKenzies star faded after missing all of 2019 due to a back injury, but he was dominant at Double-A in 2018 at age 20 with a 2.68 ERA and nearly one strikeout per inning. He certainly showed that he was ready for the majors in his debut, and now buys Cleveland extra time to decide when to bring Mike Clevinger and Zach Plesac back to the big leagues. With McKenzies successful debut, he figures to get at least one more opportunity this week.
Of course, McKenzies debut wasnt the only one to be excited about last night. The second game of the doubleheader between Washington and Miami featured former Nats second-round pick Wil Crowe and Marlins top pitching prospect Sixto Sanchez.
Sanchez got the best of Crowe, allowing three runs in five innings with four strikeouts and no walks. He did allow two home run runs and was chased after only 66 pitches, but it was a strong debut. Sanchez hit triple digits on the radar gun and also showed the control that made him such a strong prospect after posting a 1.7 BB/9 last year. Whether Sanchez gets another chance soon remains to be seen with Jose Urena and Caleb Smith on the comeback trail for the Marlins, but hes certainly worth stashing.
As for Crowe, he was knocked around by Miami, allowing four runs on six hits in 3.2 innings. His stock fell late last year after getting demolished in 10 starts at Triple-A Fresno, but Washington might be forced to lean on him down the stretch with Stephen Strasburg now officially out for the year. Unlike McKenzie and Sanchez, Crowes next start probably wont come anytime soon, however.

James Paxton (elbow) will be shut down for two weeks due to a Grade 1 flexor strain. Theres a chance he could return before the season ends. Dylan Moore was placed on the 10-day IL by Seattle with a sprained right wrist and replaced by Jake Fraley. Moore is off to an excellent start, so its a tough blow for the Mariners and fantasy managers. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports Royals closer Trevor Rosenthal is one of the hottest names on the trade market. With the bevy of closer injuries around the league, theres certainly a possibility Rosenthal could retain the closer role if he is traded. The Athletics Ken Rosenthal reports Taijuan Walker is drawing trade interest Delino DeShields left Saturdays game with left hip tightness. Zach Plesac and Mike Clevinger both threw five inning simulated games last week, but its still unclear when they will return to the Indians roster. Luis Arraez returned to the Twins lineup after missing several games with a knee injury. A.J. Puk (shoulder) threw 45 pitches in a bullpen session on Friday. Hes expected to face live hitters on Monday and could return soon for Oakland.
Ty Buttrey converted his third save of the year, cruising through two innings. He looks like the clear pitcher to own in the Angels bullpen. Now, if they could only win more games. Matt Chapman launched his ninth home run of the year. Tampa Bay had a great bullpen game, led by Aaron Slegers. He threw four perfect innings with five strikeouts against the Blue Jays. Eddie Rosario hit his seventh home run, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Randy Dobnak didnt have his best stuff but still picked up his fifth win, allowing two runs on eight hits in five-plus innings at Kansas City. His ERA remains a beautiful 1.78. Matthew Boyd had the best outing of his season to date, allowing two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings with six strikeouts at Cleveland. Matt Barnes picked up the save on Friday, but he was the loser on Saturday after allowing two runs, one earned, in the 10th inning at Baltimore. Bostons bullpen ruined a great outing by Martin Perez, who allowing one run on five hits in seven innings with six strikeouts. … Anthony Santander launched his 10th home run in the game and now has 27 RBI in 27 contests. Reynaldo Lopez returned from the injured list to allow two runs in 3.1 innings against the Cubs. Trent Grisham wasnt the only three home run hitter on Saturday, as Jose Abreu also accomplished the feat. He now has 10 home runs on the year, along with 27 RBI. Taylor Jones looks like the main beneficiary of Yordan Alvarezs season-ending knee injury. Hes started four consecutive games and hit the first home run of his career on Saturday. A former 19th round pick, Jones has developed well over the last two years, and hit .291-22-84 in 531 plate appearances at Triple-A last season Brandon Bielak was demolished by the Padres, allowing seven earned runs in only 1.1 innings. With Jose Urquidy nearing a return, Bielak could exit the Astros starting rotation soon Evan Whites bat woke up against the Rangers, going 2-for-5 with a home run and six RBI. Hes struggled at the plate this year but does have five home runs. Jordan Lyles was demolished for the second consecutive time, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in four innings. The Rangers patience could be wearing thin.
National League Quick Hits: Stephen Strasburg is officially done for the year, as he was transferred to the 60-day IL due to carpal tunnel syndrome The Cubs couldnt wait any longer on Kris Bryants wrist, placing him on the 10-day IL, retroactive to August 19. Hes only expected to miss the minimum amount of time Jose Quintana (thumb) threw a 28-pitch simulated game, and has a chance to start on Tuesday for the Cubs Carlos Martinez (COVID-19) threw a bullpen session on Thursday. Ryan Helseley also played catch, while Kodi Whitley, Junior Fernandez, Edmundo Sosa, and Rangel Ravelo are back at the teams alternate site Alex Wood is scheduled for a four inning sim game on Monday, and could return to the Dodgers starting rotation next weekend Sean Doolittle (knee) threw a 24-pitch simulated game on Friday Jay Bruce was placed on the 10-day IL by Philadelphia with a quad injury Philadelphia also made several other moves, activating Adam Haseley from the 10-day IL, and sending down Connor Brogdon and Cole Irvin, and designating Deolis Guerra for assignment Jose Urena and Caleb Smith are making progress as they work their way back from COVID-19, throwing recently at the teams alternate site Cincinnati recalled Mark Payton and optioned Josh VanMeter to their alternate training site Brock Holt was designated for assignment by Milwaukee and replaced by Jace PetersonKyle Crick (shoulder) threw live batting practice on Friday. He could be a factor to close again for Pittsburgh when he returns after Keone Kela left Fridays game with forearm tightness.
Derek Holland got on track for Pittsburgh, allowing one run in five innings with five strikeouts against Milwaukees anemic lineup Gregory Polanco had a good day, which has been rare for him so far this year, going 2-for-3 with his third homer of the year and three RBI. Adam Frazier and Jacob Stallings also chipped in with home runs Max Scherzer had another outing hed probably like to forget, allowing four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings vs. Miami Jonathan Villar swiped his seventh base of the year in the first game of the Marlins doubleheader Bryce Harper continues to swing a hot bat, hitting his seventh home run of the year on Saturday Philadelphia had Hector Neris pitch the eighth inning with a two-run lead, only to allow three runs. New closer Brandon Workman relieved Neris but didnt do much better, allowing one run on four hits in 1.1 innings and taking the loss at Atlanta Austin Riley has been ice cold for most of this season, but he now has a four-game hitting streak after going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI vs. Philly Kwang-Hyun Kim was brilliant in his second start for the Cardinals, throwing six scoreless innings and only allowing three hits vs. Cincinnati Giovanny Gallegos picked up the four-out save for St. Louis after Andrew Miller got the first two outs in the eighth inning. Gallegos has yet to allow a run this season and could run away with the closer job if given the opportunity. Harrison Bader had himself as a game with a home run and double for St. Louis, bringing his batting average up to .185 Kyle Freeland continues to quietly pitch well for the Rockies, allowing three runs on four hits in six innings with six strikeouts at the Dodgers Zach Davies had another great start for San Diego, allowing two runs on four hits in eight innings and fanning seven Astros Tyler Anderson threw a complete game for the Giants, allowing one unearned run and three hits to Arizona.
