If you want a preview of one of the Switchs biggest games this fallnot that its a particularly packed scheduleyou can go ahead and check it out now. Nintendo just dropped a free demo for Hyrule Warriors: The Age of Calamity, the upcoming hack and slash prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
To download, just go to the Age of Calamity page on the eShop and select download demo. It gave me pause, for a moment, because Im used to demos having their own listings on other platforms. From there, however, youll have access to the games first mission and progress will carry over to the main game. Which is, honestly, whats going to push me to actually try it out: I hate replaying content under any circumstances. Ive got it downloading now, and will report back with how its working out.
Oddly enough, despite being a huge fan of the Dynasty Warriors games, Ive never gotten into any of the spinoffs. For me, I think its that plot is a huge component of what makes the epic scale of the genre work for me, and Im already committed and invested in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which Dynasty Warriors is based on. Its not enough to be a warrior worth a thousand: I have to care about the outcome of the battle that Im turning the tide of.
Age of Calamity solves that problem handily by inserting itself into a story Im already invested in. I already know Link, Zelda, the Champions and all the other characters that Nintendo has introduced so far, and Ive developed a strong connection to this incarnation of Hyrule. The only problem, of course, is that we know how the story ends: badly. The forces of Hyrule are laid to waste by Calamity Ganon, setting the stage for Breath of the Wild a century later. Its a little like Red Dead Redemption 2, which suffered from its relentless march to the grim future we already knew was coming with Red Dead Redemption.
Still, theres going to be some good Bokoblin smashing to be had, and Im all about that. Ill go dive into the demo and see what happens.read more
