Youll typically know when bad weather is headed your way, whether youve looked out the sky to see that ominous gray/green tint of a summer thunderstorm, you have a fancy Dark Sky-like app that alerts you when meteorological disaster is approaching, or youve been reading the newsthe Google News, that is.
Its always been easy to find the weather in Google News, whether youre using the app or the website. I mean, you really cant miss it:
But in an attempt to help keep you a little safer during the thundery summer months, the joys of hurricane season and the wintery cold that lingers on the horizon, Google has now dropped a severe weather indicator into the Google News app.
The best part? You dont need to do any additional checking beyond simply using Google News. If theres severe weather in your areaor headed for ityoull get a little warning that looks like this:
Thanks, in advance, to the weather gods for granting California a gigantic heatwave so I can show you this feature. Ugh. Tap the Alert icon, and youll get a better description of the weather situation youre facing:

If you dont see this severe weather alert, heres the good news: Youre having a beautiful day, or at least one thats reasonably annoying, muggy or wet, rather than cataclysmic. If you disagree, or you feel your personal version of a spider sense is tingling for a bad storm, make sure youre running the most up-to-date version of Google News from the App Store or Google Play Store. That should be all you need to do to unlock these new alerts, if any are available for your area.read more
