Kamaiyah and Capolow’s ‘Oakland Nights’ Mixtape Is a Love Letter to the Bay Area

Oakland rappers Kamaiyah and Capolow have joined forces to offer their new 10 song effort Oakland Nights, a love letter to the diverse music scenes throughout the Bay Area with nods to nostalgic funk, golden-era 1990s west coast hip-hop and more.
In the months before the coronavirus pandemic, Kamiayah made some major waves with her fantastic Got It Made mixtape. Songs like “Go Crazy” and “Extravagant” were immediate standouts. In June, she joined the call for social justice with “Black Excellence.” Meanwhile rising rapper Capolow has been one of his city’s freshest voices, paying homage to TLC’s “No Scrubs” on “Drop That Bag” and creating undeniable anthems like “Drip.”
Kamaiyah and Capolow’s chemistry on Oakland Nights is promoted through minimal yet addicting synths and outstanding vocal melodies. Kamaiyah expressed why she sought to work with Capolow in a recent press release. “Because he is a dope artist that is essentially from my neighborhood. Me working with him is my way of saying, hes got next fu*k with him world. Capolow echoed that sentiment. “Oakland Nights is about the lifestyle. Our culture is like no other. We love to turn up and have fun but sh*t can get real at any moment, and I feel like we captured that on this tape.”
“Oakland Nights for me is about endless fun, from getting dressed dancing to the music, to having the car bar flowing, partying to the taco truck,” Kamaiya continued. “This project was about creating music that was hella smooth and reminded me of those days, we need that more than ever.
“Its always the right time to work with Kamaiya. She a legend,” Capolow said. “She saw how hard I been working and reached out so for me it was an easy call. This is big for Oakland.”
