Human rights movement

To mark the 70th anniversary of the UN decision to observe Human Rights Day, the Delegation of the European Union to Thailand will join the Ministry of Justice’s Rights and Liberties Protection Department and the Pichet Klunchun Dance Company to reflect on social issues through a striking dance performance titled 7 Decades Of Human Rights, on Dec 8 at Alliance Française Bangkok.
Taking stock of Thailand’s human rights journey over the past seven decades, the one-hour show will open dialogue on human rights and fundamental freedoms as well as demonstrate how the power of arts can inspire social change.
Created by internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer Pichet Klunchun, his dance troupe will communicate key principles of the seven human rights treaties that Thailand has ratified through the language of contemporary dance. For example, the everyday struggle of marginalised persons to fully enjoy the rights and freedoms guaranteed by these instruments will also be illuminated.
After the dance, the audience will get a chance to have an open conversation with Pichet on the role of arts in tackling social and human rights issues of today’s world.
His performances are like a bridge of traditional Thai classical dance language and contemporary sensibility. At the age of 16, Pichet trained in Thai classical mask dance with khon master Chaiyot Khummanee before earning domestic notoriety in contemporising khon.

Since 2002, Pichet gained a reputation on the international stage by attending several intercultural performing arts programmes in North America, Asia and Europe. He won several prestigious world-class recognitions such as the Routes’ ECF Princess Margriet Award for Cultural Diversity from European Cultural Foundation (2008), the Chevalier of the French Arts and Literature Order from the French Ministry of Culture (2012) and the John D Rockefeller 3rd Award by the Asian Cultural Council (2014).
Aiming to establish a professional standard in Thailand, he set up the Pichet Klunchun Dance Company to train young dancers in creating pure art performance. The company comprises six dancers with diverse backgrounds, varying from khon to ballet and acting to modern dance.
The company has participated in international dance festivals in North America, Europe and Asia with productions including Nijinsky Siam, Chui Cha, Black And White, Tam Kai, Dancing With Death and Bird. This year, the company premiered its latest work titled No 60 at an international art exchange programme organised by the Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama.
7 Decades Of Human Rights runs from 6-8pm on Dec 8. Admission is free. Visitors are required to register by today or until it is full. Find out more details at engage.eu or facebook.com/EUinThailand.
