Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown was one of the strongest voices urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to pick a Black woman to succeed Vice President-elect Kamala Harris in the United States Senate.
In the weeks leading up to the appointment, Brown stated in no uncertain terms, “There’s no way that Gavin Newsom should allow anyone other than a Black woman to fill the seat of Harris.” Of the seat potentially going to a Latino, he wrote, “Why would you replace the only Black woman with somebody other than a Black person? Racial minorities should know they should not try to fill each other’s vacancies.”
Newsom selected California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to fill the seat on Tuesday, and Brown gave a full reaction in his weekly Chronicle column published Saturday.
“Newsom could have and maybe should have selected a Black woman for the Senate to replace Harris, but it would not have had the same potential political payoff,” he writes. “In fact, appointing anyone but Padilla would have hurt Newsom. He would have been seen as passing over a longtime ally for the sake of enhancing his stature among women nationally, especially women of color.”
While the closest Brown came to criticizing Newsom was his “could have and maybe should have” line, San Francisco’s current mayor London Breed called the appointment “unfortunate” and a “real blow” to African Americans after being asked for her initial reaction to the appointment.
“The sad reality is [Harris] was the only African American woman in the Senate at this time, and when you think about the history of this country and the challenges that exist for African Americans especially … this is a real blow to the African American community, to African American women, to women in general,” Breed said.

( Massive mistakes are made by arrogant fools; massive evils are committed by evil people.”)
Not an African-American woman. Her family owned slaves. Get ready to be treated like one.
