5 Uplifting Moments in Latin Music This Week (January 16)

YouTube’s Black Voices Class of 2021
Representing the Afro-Latin community and Puerto Rico, Myke Towers has been named part of the inaugural 2021 class of YouTube’s Black Voices. The program kicks off with the #YouTubeBlack Voices Class of 2021: A group of 132 creators from across six countries. Through the program, YouTube plans to directly invest in 500 creators total by the end of 2023, with the goal to equip Black creators with the resources to succeed on the platform.
“These creators and artists have been doing this work already and are known by their communities, but we’re really excited to invest in them, and we believe that they can and will become household names with this support,” said YouTube vp, responsibility Malik Ducard.
Selena Gomez’s first Spanish single in a decade
Selena Gomez finally dropped her highly anticipated Spanish-language single “De Una Vez,” her first Spanish-language song in a decade. “I am incredibly proud of my Latin background,” Gomez said about her new single in a statement. “It felt empowering to sing in Spanish again and De Una Vez is such a beautiful love anthem.”
The track, produced by Tainy, Albert Hype, Jota Rosa and Neon16, is a rhythmic pop tune with hints of urban music about healing from a previous relationship and discovering your self-worth. It also marks Gomezs second Spanish-language track since “Un Año Sin Lluvia” in 2010.
LAMC returns
The Latin Alternative Music Conference is set to return in virtual form this year with dates scheduled for the week of Cinco de Mayo (May 4-7). Like last year, when it was held online for the first ever due to the coronavirus, the 22nd annual LAMC will offer free registration for panels, workshops and showcases. The second edition of the Wonder Women of Latin Music recognitions honoring women making a difference in the Latin music industry is also set to take place this year. More information about the schedule will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
Maluma on ELLE Magazine
Maluma made history as ELLE magazine’s first-ever solo male cover. The Colombian star shares the spotlight with Jennifer Lopez, who also graces a separate cover of the magazine. “Jennifer, shes not only a work partner — I would say she is my friend,” Maluma said of J.Lo during the interview. “She is someone I admire, and she is someone Ive followed since I was a little kid. So for me, being part of this movie was almost surreal. It was a big surprise when they called me, but I was ready for it.”
In May, the pair is set to star alongside Owen Wilson in the rom-com Marry Me.
