It’s an interesting time in California. Even if Joe Biden won this state landslide in 2020 and absolutely dominates liberal politics, it could be an exciting time to be a Republican in the Bear Republic.
If the latest polls are to be believed, incumbent California Governor Gavin Newsom could even lose his recall election – thanks in part to Latino Red voters.

Newsom is losing ground
Emerson College released a poll that shows support for Newsom’s recall is near deadlock – 46% support it, 48% oppose it.
Remember Joe Biden won California by 5 million votes, 63%.
Newsom itself won the state in 2018 with 3 million votes and nearly 70%.
While Caitlyn Jenner was initially surrounded by all the hustle and bustle as a GOP candidate, the popular Larry Elder has now thrown his hat into the ring. Could that get enough votes to bring Newsom down?

A little history: California politicians like Nixon and Reagan garnered large Hispanic following.
But things began to go south in the 1980s, bottoming out in 1994 when Governor Pete Wilson backed Prop 187, an electoral initiative that would have banned illegal immigrants from receiving public benefits.

Take a page from the Texas Playbook
If the GOP can see that outreach needs to be done, something like the upcoming California recall election could make a difference.
The Emerson College poll shows that 54% of Latinos say they would vote for the recall of California Governor Gavin Newsom.
California Republicans would do well to take a closer look at Texas, where along the southern border in heavily Latin American counties, more Latino candidates, especially women, are running – and winning – than Republicans.
Many of these candidates reflect a feeling that the Democrats are no longer upholding their conservative values.
Monica De La Cruz-Hernandez, who is running for Congress in 2022, said what many other Latinos are feeling: I’ve seen the Democratic Party move quickly to the left and towards socialism. And they just no longer corresponded to my values. “
If a conservative like Larry Elder were able to take control of California and the GOP could make significant strides in the Latino community – think that Bush won 44% of the Latino voters in 2004 – heaven would be the border.
